Environmental Justice

Imagine a place that is tranquil where beauty awaits the eye, a place where scenic gardens, wonderful meadows and aesthetic orchards lie.

Imagine a place where there are twelve shades of green in the grass, mountains, hills and valleys; where children can play on well manicured lawns and have the security of knowing they are in a safe space.

Imagine a place where clean waters gush in streams, rivers, seas and oceans.

Imagine a place where you will smell the aroma from the gardens, the conjuring food from neighbors’ barbeque.

Keep imagining, a place where streets are well paved, houses are structurally sound with all the amenities needed for a family to utilize.

A place where the air is so fresh that people can breathe comfortably.

Does this place really exist? Have you experienced living like this?

Are you aware that only a small amount of our world lives within this reality?

Is this the way God intended for us to live where 20% of the world live on 80% of the resources, while 80% of the world obtain only 20% of the what’s left resources?

The way millions of people live is quite overwhelming for most of us to comprehend. Are you aware that:

Families including children are forced to breathe toxic and noxious chemicals daily from sewage treatment plants, factories, scrap metal yards and other industrial waste centers?

Is it fair that young children live on the streets in many cities across the world because they have lost their parents and there is no one willing to invite those children to be part of a family?

What about families that have to rummage through dumps to find scraps to perhaps trade or barter or even worse find meals for the day.

It causes pain to my heart to learn that many are forced to buy water which is trucked to neighborhoods, but in reality its dirty water that’s been purchased for peoples survival.

People are crossing borders to attempt to experience living in a house with their family rather than a shack, to maybe have a garden and share the dream that many have as a reality.

Is this how our world will continue to be? What about the kingdom here on earth?

Should only a few people have all the resources and the majority have none?

How does our faith determine how we live our lives knowing there are 2.5 billion people dying for necessities in their lives?

What can we do in helping others find stability?

Should we feel guilty or point fingers making judgmental criticisms of people’s shortcomings?

Should we feel superior for having abundance and just continue living blindly?

Or Should We:

Begin to make ourselves aware of people’s struggles and day to living by learning others stories, putting a name to faces. By doing so we will begin to act because with information comes moral responsibility.

We have t o begin to be voices that challenge injustice whether economic, social, political, environmental or racial.

How can we comfortably live lives of comfort, affluence, sophistication when there are 30,000re 30,000

There is so much that can be done if we each found one area of passion to assiduously work on. Mother Teresa of Calcutta challenged us that we can do no great thing only small things with great love. By using our gifts, sharing resources, talents, networking, praying, mentoring, making others aware through education awareness, challenging political powers we could all create a society or help to transform a society that eagerly waits for justice to thrive.
